Message from Mrs Vaille

Hi there C4,

I just wanted to say to you all (including Mr T) how amazing I think your scooter rack inquiry/project turned out! I can see how hard everyone has worked to achieve this. It is always great to find a practical solution to problems!! That's what engineers, designers and inventors are doing all around the world every day! I wouldn't be surprised if lots of schools want to have scooter racks like yours!

Mr T and Mrs Dawkins surprised me yesterday when out of the blue (really it was grey!!!! And raining!!) they ambushed me and asked me to be part of your opening ceremony!!!! I was delighted, but not expecting that!!!! So.... I didn't make a little opening/tape cutting speech because I needed a bit more time to think! Any way I really think everyone just wanted to get the tape cut and the scooters in and...... The scooter rack worked perfectly. I wonder how many times the design had to be changed?

Anyway I should have said: "CONGRATULATIONS C4 for all your hard work, creativity, and ingenuity in coming up with a solution to the problem of storing scooters during the day at Deanwell School!"

Happy Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all

From  Mrs Vaile :)

Our Scooter Inquiry

Term four 2013 has started with a hiss and a roar!. First C4 got approval from the Board of Trustees to purchase the equipment we needed from Placemakers. We were all very pleased when the BOT approved the spending of up $200. The students that presented our Powerpoint to the BOT did really well.

Next we were off to Placemakers (Know How Can Do) on Clarence Street to purchase the wood. Cliff and Bob from Placemakers were great. They looked at our designs and cut the wood to size for us. They also got the screws, bolts and drill bits we needed to complete the job. Then Val the manager said that they would donate all the materials. We were surprised but very grateful. We said thank you very much and then sung them some songs.

Last week we headed to Melville Intermediate School to use their Wood work rooms. Matiu Pete helped us with the cutting of the slots and grooves while  the students got to use the belt sander and the orbital sander to take off the rough edges.

This week we have begun work on laying the pavers for the base of our scooter stand. Mr Braybrook is going to help students tomorrow to dig the pavers into the ground.

Everything seems to be going to plan.  Thanks so much to everybody who has helped to make this project come together.

This is the team who spoke at the BOT sharing their presentation
to Bob and Cliff.

This is Bob looking over our designs and
plans.

This is Cliff and Bob working to cut our wood for us.

Meiani is checking the parts after they have been cut to
length.

Cliff is making sure he gets the right measurments.

Levii is looking down the edge of one of our
scooter stands to see if it is straight.

This is Cliff after all his hard work for us.

This is Val telling us that she would donate all the
resources. Thanks Placemakers!!!

Scooter presentation to our stakeholders

On Monday we will be presenting our findings so far with our scooter inquiry to the whole school at assembly.

Thank you for the massive effort all of you have put into this project so far. I hope those who are presenting on Monday will practice what they have to say and have it ready for Monday. We will have a whole run through in the library before assembly.

Here is the video you guys produced, with some help. Some really great acting.

Scooter Mania

Well all the surveys have been returned and the next step is to interpret the data from the survey. We had a great response from those in our community who are our stakeholders in this project.

It will be interesting to see what each of your groups come up with.

We have had one stakeholder ask us a number of questions that we will need to answer that did not form part of our survey. So we will consider those during our company meetings. I hope your C.E.O (Chief Executive Officer) is ready to organise and lead your groups decision making.

Mr Poland past on this video clip of an interesting concept. Write a post of what you think about it.

It also meets one of our requirements. Can you name what that requirement is?

Tuesday the 7th May. iPad training with the teachers @ Deanwell

Last night students from C4 participated in some staff training with the some of the teachers from Deanwell School. It was so neat to see the collaboration and connections students and teachers were making with each other as they worked together to learn about the possibilities that the iPad could bring to the classroom environment.

I heard teachers and students laughing as they shared their knowledge with each other. I saw people discover new things and create some clever ideas using some of the Apps that were presented to them. I can only say from my point of view that those who attended enjoyed themselves and discovered something new about technology and about themselves.

Thanks so much to the six students who helped out on the night. I could not have done it without you.

Thank you so much Meiani, Katherine, Dorian, Chloe, Turahui and Sarah-Lee

Chloe is showing Mrs Spackman and Mrs Burrows how to use  Popplet.

Mrs Ditchburn is having fun while learning new techniques using the iPad. Katherine was very helpful.

The ladies are thinking hard about what they should do next. Meiani is giving them some ideas.

Mrs Doul put her shades on for effect and Mrs Dawkins was enjoying the experience. Sarah-Lee had lots of fun too.
Dorian is helping Mrs Russell with Doodle Buddy. She is very creative.

Turahui had to work one on one with Mr Poland to help him stay on task.
I sat in and listened to some of the wonderful conversations that were happening. I thoroughly enjoyed myself too.

Setting SMART goals

Helping my students set goals the smart way

We have been talking in class about setting goals for reading, writing and mathematics. There are lots of other things we could set goals for. These are just three.

This powerpoint can be helpful for you to write smart goals. Have you worked out what SMART stands for? Watch the power point and maybe you will find out.

Some sentence starters are good to use too.

My goal in reading is ......
By the end of term two I want to....

The next thing to think about is "How will I achieve this goal" This means thinking about what are some things you need to work on related to the goal. These are called Next Steps.

You will see me....
I will use...
I will use my reading comprehension strategies to....
I am learning to...
It is important that I....

I have read through all of your initial goal setting and I think with some more tweaking you can make your goals

  • Specific
  • Measureable
  • Achievable
  • Realistic
  • Time based
Good Luck!

Here is an example of a Reading Goal and its Next Steps

Reading Goal
By the end of term two I will be able to stop at words that I don't understand or cannot say and think about them.

Next Step
You will see me sound out the hard words and  read the words around the difficult word in the sentence to gain meaning. Then read the whole sentence again.

Can't wait for camp!

I can't wait for camp. I hope it's gonna be fun there. I hope I overcome my fear of heights and other stuff. The two things I really want to try is archery and the food. The first thing I want to try I want to try is the food because I recently heard that the food was awesome so I switched archery to the second thing I wanted to try at camp. I can't believe that it's 2 weeks away because there are some things I don't want to try at camp like mountain biking because I don't like to bike that much. I can't wait to try new things at camp.

Liam Overmeyer's Fund Raising for Cancer

I just found out yesterday that our very own Liam will be shaving off his awesome hair to raise money for cancer. Liam is a very brave boy. I couldn't do that. Yes I literally couldn't do that.

Here is the link to his fundraising page. From there you can make a pledge and it tells you when it will be happening. Let's support Liam and all the kids and families who deal with cancer.

http://www.fundraiseonline.co.nz/LiamOvermeyer/

I just donated $20. But I want my pledge to be used to try and get Liam to not shave his hair. That way we could start a battle of payments for and against shaving his hair thereby raising double the amount. His goal is $500. Come on people!!!

C4 and A2 - Buddy Classes

Last week we caught up with our buddy class. We hung out together in the quiet area. The first thing I noticed about the quiet area was how peaceful and tranquil it was. I guess that's why they call it the quiet area. Watching the children reading together was a highlight. Kids helping kids, that's what makes me happy. Well done kids. Looking forward to our next gathering.

Mathletics

today I gained 2000 points in mathletics in an hour! I kept on doing the activities and I learnt alot of multiplying by 1000, 100 and tens. I only went on live mathletics a couple of times. I'm trying to beat my high score that is 9000 and up!

Over the holidays, my family went to Rainbows End.My highlight ride was the Invader.I was tall enough to go on all of the rides. One of the rides that I didn't want to ride was the Invader. It spins around for like five minutes. When I went on the chair, I said to my cousin that is right next to me " I'm so crazy! Am I out of my mind?!?!?!" Something rised up behind our backs that were supposed to keep us from falling off. I just felt like running off that ride and go and sit back down. The ride started to spin like a spinning top.And after a while we reached the top of the tracks and it was so scary! When I face backwards it feels much scarier than facing forwards. I sreamed my heart out for about two minutes and then I stopped and I got used to it.At the end I felt like throwing up. What I usually do to prevent it from coming out is that I eat something like an ice cream or an ice block. What I learnt about myself was I'm strong and that I won't know what I can do unless I give it a go.I actually wanted to go again.

Cricket skills

A couple of days ago we had Cricket skills. All classes participated in the Cricket skill, They were called Cricket drills. Our coaches were called Jordaan and Jo. We had a lot of fun at school today

Swimming sports

Well, Yesterday C block had swimming sports. We all had a game of the relay called Spongebob relay. Our teachers lead it for the parents so they can watch it carefully. My best friends Sarah-lee and Julienne they particapated in the school Swimming sports. For the Spongebob relay,We had a quick dip in the pool and then hopped out. When we hopped out of the pool Mrs Russell said that Team 1 for C4 won. We all said yay we won, Because we are the best. I loved swimming sports the class C4 did aswell.

Spongebob relay

Yesterday it was the swimming sports. My highlight was the spongebob relay. How it goes is you have a sponge in your hand and you have to squish water out of the sponge into the ice cream container. I swam with it because it was more fun to do that. My best friends Sarah-lee and Lexus participated in it.They were in the same team.I  was in a different team with boys. you would think I would be disapointed but I am not. they're just like girls but a different gender. It took a long time to overflow the buckets. It was the best activity.
THIS DAY WAS SO FUN BUT I PLAY LEAGE

Cricket with Joe and Jordan

C4 was having fun playing cricket drills with Joe and Jordan. There were 5 different activities that we could do. Each team had four people in it. We had an hour to do all five activities and we had 10 minutes for each activity with 10 minutes to learn each activity. All four people in each group had three turns at each activity.
Jaymee's favourite part of the activities was the batting. This is a photo of C4 after the cricket lessons. Mr T told us to say "Mr Poland is sexy." It was a lot of fun. Thank you Joe and Jordan.

Mihi

I came across this link when I was doing some research on completing a Mihi. Morgan is one of my students from a few years ago and he gives some good information about a Mihi as well as saying his mihi. I hope it helps you to understand how to put together your mihi.
